I build software people rely on.

I'm Omar Younis, a software engineer in Sunnyvale, California. I've shipped an iOS app to the App Store, written the first CUDA implementation of Brent's method, put ML models into production, and built software the Coast Guard runs at every air station. Before that, I spent seven years as a mechanical engineer. Now I'm pointed at AI and autonomous systems.

It started with a V8 engine.

I was six when my father started teaching me mechanical design and engineering. Not long after, I built a working 1/8-scale V8 engine. In high school it was composites, carbon fiber and fiberglass. I liked making things people actually used, and that never changed.

I studied mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a minor in aerospace, then spent seven years as a mechanical engineer across defense systems, medical devices, and precision manufacturing. At D&K Engineering I led a 20-person team building the ecoATM recycling kiosk and helped secure a $1M contract extension. The constant through all of it: find what the system needs, then build it. Increasingly, what the system needed was software. The Python tools I wrote to automate my own work kept spreading to other teams.

SOFTWARE

So I retrained, properly.

In 2021 I went all in: a 500-hour data science immersive at General Assembly, then a machine learning role at Elemeno AI, improving delivery predictions for Brazil's largest package carrier by 25 percent. An M.S. in Computer Science at Cal State Fullerton followed, finished May 2026, while I taught C++ to 64 students as instructor of record. At Qualcomm I built AWS pipelines processing over a million data points a minute.

My graduate project was the first CUDA implementation of Brent's root-finding method, 35 times faster at the kernel. It taught me to think in hardware, memory layout, and where performance actually comes from.

WHAT'S NEXT

Next: AI and autonomous systems.

Since 2022 I've been the volunteer software engineer for the Coast Guard Auxiliary at Sector San Diego, a role I created. The reporting tools I built run at every U.S. Coast Guard air station. I also built a maritime collision avoidance trainer that solves radar plotting geometry, and I'm rebuilding it now as a TypeScript monorepo.

AI and autonomous systems sit exactly where my two careers overlap. That is the work I want next.

Cut pilot training qualification tracking from six weeks to two days with a reporting tool now used at every U.S. Coast Guard air station. Awarded the Auxiliary Achievement Medal by the Commandant of the Coast Guard. Sole maintainer since 2022.

Built and industrialized AWS ETL pipelines processing over one million data points per minute for machine learning teams, and cut feature development and testing time by 40 percent with logging, monitoring, and alerting across the stack.

Elemeno AI

AUG – NOV 2022

Machine Learning Engineer

Improved delivery time prediction accuracy by 25 percent for Brazil's largest package delivery company by designing and training a feed-forward neural network in PyTorch.

Data Science Immersive, 500+ hours

Built an ASL letter detector with a retrained YOLOv5, an NLP classifier for Reddit posts, and a team model estimating California wildfire likelihood from weather and historical data.

D&K Engineering

Lead Mechanical Engineer, R&D

Led a 20-person team on next-generation ecoATM kiosks and helped secure a $1M contract extension. Built Python tooling that raised engineering efficiency by roughly 50 percent, plus embedded control software for a Stanford genome-mapping prototype.

Shipped Nahtadi to the App Store with a 5.0 rating average. Wrote the first CUDA implementation of Brent's method. Fine-tuned a 1.5B-parameter LLM and ran it entirely on an iPhone 14 Pro's A16 chip.
